Application of excellent fire-resistant fiber meta-aramid in fire extinguisher protective clothing
Every year, thousands of burn accidents occur around the world due to improper clothing, and severe burns are often caused by the clothing being worn catching fire. The degree of skin burns caused by burning work clothes is often more serious than the degree of burns on directly exposed skin. For this reason, many developed countries, led by the United States, have formulated strict regulations to ensure that workers working close to fire sources, including at home, , fire-resistant fabrics must be used to prevent people from being exposed to fire hazards.
Meta-Nomex (Nomex1313), as a fire-retardant fiber with excellent performance, has gradually become a high-performance material widely used in fire extinguisher protective clothing and has made rapid progress.
Meta-position Nomex has a soft and snow-white appearance, is slender and loose, and is lustrous. It is easy to finish and is not much different from ordinary chemical fibers. It has high temperature resistance, intrinsic fire resistance, electrical insulation, radiation resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, etc. Excellent characteristics. The outstanding feature of meta-Nomex is that it has good high temperature resistance and can be used for a long time at high temperatures of 220°C. Its electrical and mechanical properties can remain effective for 10 years, and its dimensional stability is excellent. It can be used at temperatures around 250°C. The shrinkage rate is only 1%. It will not shrink, embrittle, soften or melt when exposed to high temperatures of 300°C for a short period of time. It only begins to decompose under strong high temperatures above 370°C, and carbonization begins at around 400°C. When encountering a sudden high temperature of 900℃~1500℃, the cloth surface will quickly carbonize and thicken, forming a unique thermal insulation barrier to protect the wearer from escaping.
The limiting oxygen index of meta-Nomex fiber is greater than 28%. It is a flame-retardant fiber, so it will not burn in the air, does not support combustion, and is self-extinguishing. This inherent characteristic derived from its own molecular structure makes meta-Nomex fiber permanently fireproof and will not be damaged or weakened by human factors such as time and cleaning.
From the perspective of Nomex fabrics, the fabrics usually used in fire protection and forest police protective clothing are not pure meta-Nomex, but add a small amount of para-Nomex and conductive fibers. The representative ones are Nomex IIIA, Nomex DeltaT and new Developed domestically produced Tameda IIIT and other fabrics.
Nomex IIIA is a fabric developed by DuPont. It is also a fabric that was first used in firefighter protective work clothes. It is a mixed fabric of 93% Nomex fiber, 5% Kevlar fiber and 2% P-140 conductive fiber. It has the excellent properties of three fibers: a chemical fiber fabric blended with Kevlar fiber, which makes the fabric have good fire resistance, and can obtain high strength and abrasion resistance; and a chemical fiber fabric blended with conductive fiber, which can obtain good antistatic properties. . Nomex DeltaT is a mixture of 75% Nomex fiber, 23% Kevlar fiber and 2% carbon fiber.
3T fabric is a fabric newly developed by Yantai Taihe New Materials Co., Ltd. The company uses its technical advantages in meta-Nomex and para-Nomex to recently develop the world’s unique Nomex-based conductive fiber and will These three products are blended with chemical fiber fabrics in specific proportions to make Nomex special protective fabric, namely Tameda 3T fabric. The fabric breaks with strong protrusion, and the smoldering afterburning time is shorter. The smoldering afterburning time can be as low as 0 seconds, which can better provide safety protection for the wearer. Due to the outstanding performance of this fabric among similar products at home and abroad, this product is gradually becoming one of the most widely used fire-resistant and high-temperature resistant protective fabrics in fire-fighting protective clothing.
According to incomplete statistics, 70% of fire-fighting protective clothing using Nomex materials worldwide currently accounts for 70%, and the trend is continuing to grow. The revision of my country’s new fire protective clothing and forest police protective clothing standards has further improved the protective performance of domestic fire-fighting protective clothing, from the outer fabric, water-blocking and breathable layer to the insulation layer and comfort layer, meta-Nomex and counter-Nomex materials They have been widely used and have greatly improved the level of protective equipment for fire fighters and forest police in our country.
With the improvement of the overall safety awareness of society and the needs of humanization, the requirements for personal protective clothing have gradually increased. On the one hand, Nomex fiber can make fire protective clothing have more reliable thermal protection, while also being lightweight, comfortable and beautiful; on the other hand, domestic Nomex manufacturers have made breakthroughs in advanced technologies and the production scale has grown rapidly. The reduction in cost will further promote its application, thereby making Nomex materials have broader application prospects in protective clothing in this field.
